FASTag: Barrier-less Tolling System Launch in Gujarat
The introduction of a barrier-less tolling system in India marks a significant shift towards automated and seamless travel on national highways. Set to launch on December 1, 2026, the new system will be implemented at the Chorayasi Toll Plaza along the Surat–Bharuch section of NH-48 in Gujarat.
This innovative approach will allow vehicles to pass through toll plazas without stopping. The system will utilize AI cameras and sensors to scan vehicle number plates and FASTags, streamlining the toll collection process.
Key features of the new tolling system:
- Toll payments will be automatically deducted from linked bank accounts or digital wallets.
- Cash payments at toll plazas will be phased out, making FASTag or UPI mandatory for all vehicles.
- Penalties will apply for vehicles that do not have valid FASTags or sufficient balance.
- If a FASTag fails, QR codes will be available for UPI payments.
- Drivers must ensure their FASTag is active and linked to their bank account to avoid disruptions.
- The government aims to create a cashless highway network, reducing human intervention.
Nitin Gadkari, India’s Minister for Road Transport and Highways, emphasized the benefits of this initiative. “Now you will not have to stand in long queues at toll plazas or stop your vehicle,” he stated. He further explained, “The aim is to make travel so smooth that drivers can reach their destination without stopping.”
The current system requires vehicles to halt at barriers for payment—a practice that will soon be outdated. As part of this transition, entry to toll plazas may be restricted for those who repeatedly violate the new regulations.
This ambitious project reflects India’s commitment to embracing technology and enhancing the travel experience on its highways. However, officials have not yet confirmed whether all toll plazas across the country will adopt this model by December 2026.
