FASTag Revolutionizes Toll Collection in Gujarat

The introduction of a barrier-less tolling system in India marks a significant shift towards automated and seamless travel on national highways. Starting from December 1, 2026, vehicles will pass through toll plazas without stopping, making journeys smoother for everyone.

This innovative system, launched at the Chorayasi Toll Plaza on the Surat–Bharuch section of NH-48, uses AI technology to scan vehicle number plates and FASTags. Nitin Gadkari, Minister for Road Transport and Highways, emphasized that “now you will not have to stand in long queues at toll plazas or stop your vehicle.”

The new process will automatically deduct toll payments from linked bank accounts or digital wallets. As cash payments phase out, FASTag or UPI will become mandatory for all drivers. Gadkari stated, “The aim is to make travel so smooth that drivers can reach their destination without stopping.”

To ensure compliance, penalties will be imposed on vehicles without valid FASTags or insufficient balances. Additionally, QR codes will be available for UPI payments if the FASTag system fails. Drivers must keep their FASTags active and linked to their accounts.

The government aims to create a cashless highway network across India while reducing human intervention at toll plazas. This transition aligns with broader trends in digital payments and automated systems.

As this new system rolls out, entry to toll plazas may be restricted for those with repeated violations of the rules. While this initiative brings exciting changes to travel efficiency, some uncertainties remain regarding its full implementation and user adaptation.
