The inauguration of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway’s ‘Missing Link’ took place on May 1, 2026, coinciding with Maharashtra Day celebrations. This event, while marking a significant milestone in infrastructure development, led to substantial traffic disruptions across the region.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated the project, which spans 13.3 kilometers and cost around Rs 6,700 crore. The new stretch aims to enhance road safety and cut travel time between Mumbai and Pune by approximately 25–30 minutes.

This upgrade includes advanced features such as tunnels, viaducts, and elevated sections that bypass the steep Khandala ghat. The distance between the two cities is also reduced by about 6 kilometers.

Fadnavis described the project as an “engineering marvel” and emphasized its potential to generate economic activity worth Rs 70,000 crore. A notable highlight is a stunning 182-meter-high cable-stayed bridge over Tiger Valley—one of the tallest in India—designed to withstand wind speeds up to 240 kmph.

However, the inauguration’s timing during Maharashtra Day festivities caused heavy congestion on nearby roads. Fadnavis acknowledged these issues and apologized for the inconvenience caused to travelers.

Experts have raised concerns about road safety during monsoon and winter months due to possible dense fog affecting visibility. Initially, only light motor vehicles and passenger buses are permitted on this new route; heavy vehicles will not be allowed until at least October 31.
