Kylian Mbappe’s World Cup Records and Golden Boot Race

Kylian Mbappe’s World Cup Records and Golden Boot Race

Kylian Mbappe has continued his impressive performance at the World Cup, scoring for France in their 2-0 quarter-final victory against Morocco in Boston. This goal helped him equal Lionel Messi for the most non-penalty goals in the tournament. Mbappe has either broken or matched several records during this World Cup in North America.

Mbappe became France’s all-time leading goal scorer in the World Cup after his goal against Senegal in France’s tournament opener. This strike marked his 14th World Cup goal, surpassing Just Fontaine’s record of 13 goals, all of which were scored in the 1958 World Cup.

His goal against Morocco also brought his total World Cup goals to 20, placing him just one goal behind Messi on the all-time list. Furthermore, Mbappe’s first goal against Sweden established him as a leading goal scorer in World Cup knockout matches, moving him ahead of Brazilian legends Leonidas and Ronaldo.

Goal Contributions and Appearances

Mbappe’s assist for Ousmane Dembele’s goal against Morocco set another record, making him the first player to achieve 11 direct goal contributions in two different World Cups. He had 10 goal contributions (eight goals and two assists) at the Qatar World Cup 2022 and has now improved upon those figures in the current tournament. He is the first player since 1966 to reach double-digit contributions in two separate tournaments.

In terms of appearances, Mbappe is now a joint record holder for the most appearances for France in World Cup finals, matching Hugo Lloris with 20 appearances.

Golden Boot Race

Despite being level on goals with Messi, Mbappe currently leads the Golden Boot standings. Both players have eight goals in the tournament. FIFA’s tie-breaking rules prioritize assists as the first criterion. Mbappe has registered eight goals and three assists, totaling 11 direct goal contributions, while Messi has eight goals and one assist, resulting in nine goal contributions.

If the World Cup were to end today with both players still tied on eight goals, Mbappe would officially receive the Golden Boot because of his superior assist tally. The race for the Golden Boot remains competitive with several knockout matches still to be played. Other contenders include Norway’s Erling Haaland with seven goals and England captain Harry Kane with six goals.

Mbappe’s goal against Morocco was his 20th career World Cup goal in 20 tournament appearances. Messi, with 21 goals in 31 appearances across six editions (2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022, and 2026), holds the lead in the all-time men’s World Cup scoring chart.

Both players have experienced different paths in the tournament. Messi missed a penalty against Egypt in the Round of 16, but his team secured a 3-2 victory. Mbappe also missed a penalty early in the quarter-final against Morocco, which was saved by goalkeeper Yassine Bounou. However, he scored in the 60th minute to give France the lead, contributing to their 2-0 win. France has not conceded a goal in the knockout stages.

The Golden Boot race remains balanced on goals, but Mbappe’s three assists give him an advantage as the tournament progresses into its decisive final rounds.
