Zimbabwe vs south africa: Sikandar Raza Reflects on Team’s Growth and Future

Sikandar Raza | Captain of Zimbabwe – Qualifying for the Super Eights was undoubtedly a significant milestone. Securing a spot in the next World Cup without going through qualifiers is a tremendous accomplishment. Despite our losses in the Super 8s, I can assure you that we have learned valuable lessons. After our initial match, we improved. Following the second match, we continued to enhance our performance. These are the aspects I reflect on when I assess my team; we are evolving and learning, and as a captain, I couldn’t have asked for more, nor could I be prouder of the boys. As a leader, I am immensely proud of this group because I genuinely believe we improved with each game. When we return to the ICC event next time, I hope we will be even stronger. (Regarding the involvement of senior players) Absolutely, it may seem distant for some, but we understand our current position and how we progress. For me, the culture we have established in the team is crucial; whether we are present or not, this team should function smoothly. If Allah wills, we hope all senior players remain fit and healthy. We would love to be part of that journey. Moreover, the relationships we’ve fostered with fans, both at home and abroad, indicate we are on the right path, providing hope to those back home. (On crowd support) The Chevrons have achieved something unprecedented. I believe we inspire parents to encourage their children to pursue cricket as a primary sport, which will enhance our player pool and standards. Currently, Zimbabwe needs to focus on expanding its talent base. However, I feel that what we have accomplished will lead to automatic progress. (On the future roadmap) I can confidently say that Zimbabwe’s management, including the MD and chairman, has been actively working behind the scenes. We have three home tours and one away tour scheduled for 2026, with the potential for two additional tours and three A-series. Management has been diligently planning without revealing too much; you will see more of Zimbabwe in the future. Right now, we need to take a moment to regroup, strategize, and outline our approach for the 2027 World Cup, but I assure you that management is hard at work, and you can expect to see Zimbabwe more frequently. Raza built a 38-run partnership with Dion Myers.
