Voter Search: Updates on Voter Lists in West Bengal and Assam

“We have faith in the judicial system. Many people in the area are in panic. We have asked them not to worry. If necessary, we will organise a larger movement,” said Zakir Hossain, reflecting the concerns of many voters in West Bengal as the final voter list is published amid significant changes.

The final voter list of West Bengal now includes 6 crore 44 lakh 52 thousand 609 voters, but the process has not been without its challenges. Currently, 60 lakh 6 thousand 675 voters’ names are under adjudication, and 63 lakh 66 thousand 952 names have been removed from the list. This has led to a climate of uncertainty and anxiety among the electorate.

The final voter list for West Bengal was published following the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), which aimed to ensure the accuracy of electoral rolls. However, the situation has raised concerns among political parties, with the Trinamool Congress (TMC) voicing its apprehensions. Byron Biswas, a party representative, stated, “The party would not accept what he termed a conspiracy to influence the elections.”

In Assam, the final voter list covers 126 assembly constituencies and includes over 24.95 million voters. This figure represents a decrease from the previous total of 25,201,624 after revisions were made. The final list consists of 12,482,213 male voters, 12,475,583 female voters, and 343 third-gender voters, showcasing a diverse electorate.

The integrated draft voter list for Assam was published on December 27, 2025, with a period for submitting claims and objections running until January 22, 2026. This process is crucial for ensuring that all eligible voters are accurately represented in the electoral rolls.

In West Bengal, the Booth Level Officers completed house-to-house verification on December 11, 2025, a step aimed at enhancing the integrity of the voter list. However, the final publication of the voter list has been postponed to February 14, 2026, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the electoral process. Murshidabad district alone has 11,01,145 names marked as pending, further complicating the situation.

The Election Commission (ECI) has emphasized the importance of an accurate voter list, encouraging all citizens to actively participate in the SIR process to ensure that electoral rolls remain up to date. “The ECI has encouraged all citizens to actively participate in the SIR process to ensure electoral rolls remain accurate and up to date, which is fundamental to free and fair elections,” stated a representative from the commission.

As the electoral landscape continues to evolve, the focus remains on ensuring that all eligible voters are accounted for and that the electoral process is transparent and fair. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the final resolutions of the pending names and the implications for the upcoming elections.
