വെളിച്ചെണ്ണ: Coconut Oil Prices Plummet in Kerala

In Kerala, coconut prices have dropped significantly, but middlemen in the southern region are taking advantage of this situation by selling coconuts at inflated rates. This has put a financial strain on consumers who rely on these essential products.

The price of green coconuts has decreased from 78 rupees per kilogram to just 42 rupees, while dried coconut now costs 52 rupees per kilogram. Additionally, the price of copra has fallen from 200 rupees to 150 rupees per kilogram. Despite these reductions, coconut oil is still priced at around 260 rupees per liter, down from over 500 rupees.

Farmers are experiencing a severe financial crisis as they struggle to cope with these price drops. “We had a golden period recently, but now we’re facing hardships,” shared a local farmer from Alappuzha.

Interestingly, while northern Kerala sells green coconuts for about 40-42 rupees per kilogram, southern districts see prices soaring to between 65 and 70 rupees. This stark contrast highlights the role of middlemen who exploit these regional disparities.

The situation has been exacerbated by increased production in Tamil Nadu and export disruptions to the Gulf due to regional conflicts. The ongoing heatwave has also led to a sudden increase in coconut supply, yet consumers are still paying more than they should.

Local organizations like Kerafed are urging the government to intervene and stabilize prices. They believe that without action, both farmers and consumers will continue to suffer. “We need support to ensure fair pricing for everyone involved,” stated a representative from Kerafed.

As the market fluctuates, many observers remain concerned about the long-term implications for both farmers and consumers in Kerala’s coconut industry.
