Udhayanidhi Stalin’s Victory Amid DMK’s Loss in Tamil Nadu Elections

Udhayanidhi Stalin retained his Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni Assembly constituency with a lead of 7,140 votes over D. Selvam in the recent Tamil Nadu elections. This victory stands out amid a significant setback for the DMK, as his father, M.K. Stalin, lost his Kolathur seat.

Udhayanidhi’s win marks his second consecutive term in Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni, where he previously won by an impressive margin of 69,355 votes in 2021. However, this year’s lead was notably narrower, reflecting a shift in voter sentiment.

The results on election day revealed a dramatic decline for the DMK, which saw its seat share plummet from 133 to just 6 by 5 PM. Meanwhile, the TVK party emerged as a formidable force, winning 10 seats and leading in an additional 99.

Political observers note that Udhayanidhi is widely seen as the political heir of both Karunanidhi and M.K. Stalin. As one expert remarked, “Udhayanidhi is expected to be the leader of opposition if DMK ends up being the main opposition party.” This expectation underscores the challenges ahead for him and the party.

Interestingly, Udhayanidhi’s constituency has deep roots within the DMK family—his grandfather, Karunanidhi, won three times from Chepauk before its unification with Triplicane in 2011. This historical context adds weight to Udhayanidhi’s role moving forward.

As for this election cycle, Udhayanidhi narrowly led by just 1,048 votes during round eight of counting. The seat itself falls under the Chennai Central Lok Sabha constituency and has traditionally been a DMK stronghold.

While Udhayanidhi celebrates his victory, the broader implications for the DMK remain uncertain as they navigate this political landscape reshaped by the latest elections.
