Taranjit Singh Sandhu Appointed as Lieutenant Governor of Delhi
Taranjit Singh Sandhu was appointed as the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi on March 5, 2026, by President Droupadi Murmu, marking a significant transition in the administration as he replaces Vinai Kumar Saxena.
Born on January 23, 1963, in Punjab, Sandhu comes from a distinguished family with a legacy in education and freedom fighting. His grandfather, Teja Singh Samundri, was a prominent freedom fighter, and his father, Bishan Singh Samundri, served as the founding Vice-Chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University.
Sandhu’s educational background includes a Bachelor’s degree in History from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, and a Master’s in International Relations from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). He joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1988, embarking on a career that has spanned over 35 years in various diplomatic roles.
His notable positions include serving as the Indian Ambassador to the United States from 2020 to 2024, where he was recognized as one of India’s leading experts on U.S. relations. Additionally, he held the role of High Commissioner to Sri Lanka from January 2017 to January 2020.
In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Sandhu contested from the Amritsar constituency, finishing in third place with approximately 22.88% of the vote. Following this, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on March 19, 2024, further solidifying his political aspirations.
Sandhu’s diplomatic experience also includes a tenure as Consul General in Frankfurt from 2011 to 2013. His extensive background in international relations is expected to influence his governance in Delhi.
