South Africa Leads the Semifinals
As the T20 Cricket World Cup approaches its semifinals, South Africa remains the only unbeaten side in the tournament, showcasing a strong performance throughout. Captain Aiden Markram has been a standout player, amassing 268 runs and holding an impressive captaincy record of 15 wins in 16 T20 World Cup matches.
The semifinals are scheduled for March 4 and 5, 2026, with South Africa set to face New Zealand, who advanced on net run-rate despite having lost twice in the tournament. Markram expressed confidence in the team’s preparation, stating, “It’s a completely fresh start [on Wednesday] and it being a semifinal, which is exciting as well.”
New Zealand’s path to the semifinals came at the expense of Pakistan, who, despite a victory against Sri Lanka, were eliminated from the competition. Pakistan scored 212 runs against Sri Lanka, but it was not enough to secure their place in the next round.
In a dramatic turn of events, India secured the last semifinal spot by defeating the West Indies, adding to the competitive landscape of the tournament. The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 began with 20 teams and has already surpassed 10 billion video views across ICC’s social media platforms, indicating a growing global interest in the sport.
Mitchell Santner of New Zealand acknowledged the pressure of the semifinals, saying, “We back ourselves on one-off games against most teams, being able to adapt as quick as we can to what’s in front of us.” He also reflected on the heartbreak of South Africa in the previous tournament, noting, “We know the heartbreak of South Africa two years ago.”
With an average watch time of 58 minutes per unique user, the current tournament has seen a 28 percent increase in unique users compared to the 2024 event, alongside a 56 percent increase in total playtime.
The final of the T20 World Cup is set for March 8, 2026, where the stakes will be high for the teams that advance. As the tournament progresses, cricket fans eagerly await the outcomes of the semifinals and the final showdown.
