Ratna Debnath Wins Election in Panihati, West Bengal

“This victory is the victory of the people of Panihati, of the entire Bengal,” Ratna Debnath declared after winning her debut election as a BJP candidate in the Panihati Assembly constituency on May 4, 2026.

Debnath triumphed over Tirthankar Ghosh from TMC by a substantial margin of 28,836 votes. She garnered 87,977 votes, while Ghosh received 59,141 votes. Kalatan Dasgupta from CPI(M) finished third with 24,032 votes.

The backdrop to her political journey is deeply personal. Debnath entered politics following the brutal rape and murder of her daughter in August 2024 at RG Kar Medical College. This tragedy sparked widespread outrage and highlighted issues surrounding women’s safety in West Bengal.

Her campaign resonated with many voters who seek accountability in governance. “I dedicate this victory to Prime Minister Modi,” she said, acknowledging the support that helped propel her to victory.

The BJP’s success in West Bengal has been historic. They crossed the two-thirds mark with a total of 202 seats, marking a significant shift in the political landscape previously dominated by TMC.

Debnath emphasized that her win reflects a collective desire for change. “I could not have done this alone,” she stated, highlighting the community’s role in her campaign.

This election not only marks a personal achievement for Debnath but also represents a broader movement towards prioritizing women’s safety and rights within the political discourse of West Bengal.
