Raja Shivaji film sparks legal controversy in Maharashtra
The film Raja Shivaji, directed by Riteish Deshmukh, has stirred legal controversy just before its release in Maharashtra, raising questions about how history is portrayed on screen.
The Bombay High Court recently dismissed a petition claiming the film’s title was derogatory. This ruling highlights the ongoing sensitivity surrounding historical representation, particularly regarding figures like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
Set in the mid-seventeenth century, the film chronicles the life of Shivaji Shahaji Bhonsle as he evolves into Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. His primary adversary is Afzal Khan, a figure representing the Mughal Empire during a time of legitimized anarchy in Maharashtra.
With a runtime of 195 minutes, the film features a blend of Marathi and Hindi dialogue. The screenplay is co-written by Deshmukh alongside Jaideep Yadav and Prajakt Deshmukh.
Notably, Vidya Balan portrays the role of the Adlishahi queen, while Salman Khan makes a cameo appearance as Jeeva Mahala. Critics have described Raja Shivaji as a “studious, plodding affair,” which emphasizes Shivaji’s quest for Hindavi Swaraj—sovereignty for his land and people.
The narrative highlights the brutal tactics employed by Shivaji’s opponents. As one critic noted, “The power struggle causes blood to flow and bodies to be desecrated.” Such depictions reflect not only historical realities but also the emotional weight these stories carry for many in Maharashtra.
As audiences await its release, discussions continue about how films like this shape public perception of history. Riteish Deshmukh’s portrayal of the Maratha emperor shows his dedication to bringing this significant figure to life, even if some feel it lacks a certain kingliness.
The film’s release is expected to spark further debate on historical narratives and their representation in popular media. With its mix of action and drama set against a backdrop of conflict between the Maratha Empire and the Deccan Sultanate, Raja Shivaji promises to be both entertaining and thought-provoking.
