Philippines Declares National Energy Emergency Amid Ongoing Conflict
The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has created uncertainty in global energy markets and significant volatility in international oil prices. In light of these challenges, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has declared a state of national energy emergency, emphasizing the imminent danger posed to the country’s energy supply.
President Marcos Jr. stated, “A state of national energy emergency is hereby declared in light of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, and the resulting imminent danger posed upon the availability and stability of the country’s energy supply.” This declaration aims to safeguard the Philippines’ energy security and shield consumers from the anticipated rise in electricity prices.
The emergency measure will remain in effect for one year, allowing the government to procure necessary fuel and petroleum products to ensure a timely and sufficient supply. Currently, the Philippines has about 45 days of fuel supply based on its consumption levels.
To bolster its reserves, the government plans to procure 1 million barrels of oil to build a buffer stock. This proactive approach is intended to mitigate the impact of fluctuating energy prices on Filipino households and businesses.
As part of the emergency response, the Philippines will temporarily increase its reliance on coal due to surging liquefied natural gas prices. Notably, coal-fired power plants currently account for nearly 60% of the country’s power generation.
Sharon Garin, a key government official, indicated that this temporary measure could begin as early as April 1. The government is taking steps to ensure that the energy needs of the population are met during this challenging period.
Observers are closely monitoring the situation, as the implications of the Middle East conflict continue to unfold. The Philippine government remains committed to maintaining energy stability and protecting its citizens from the repercussions of global energy market fluctuations.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the full extent of the measures that will be implemented, but officials are optimistic about the steps being taken to secure the nation’s energy future.
