Noida News: Factory Workers Protest Over Low Wages Escalates
The recent protests in Noida, particularly in Phase 2, have escalated dramatically as factory workers expressed their frustration over low wages. This unrest follows a significant wage increase in Haryana, where the minimum wage was raised from ₹14,000 to ₹19,000, highlighting the disparity with Uttar Pradesh’s minimum wage of around ₹13,000.
As tensions rose, the protest turned violent, with reports indicating that several vehicles were vandalised and at least one vehicle was set on fire. Incidents of stone pelting were also reported, causing damage to property in the area. The situation prompted a heavy police deployment to restore order.
District Magistrate Medha Rupam addressed the situation, urging workers to continue their duties peacefully and to avoid falling prey to rumours or misleading information. She emphasized the importance of maintaining calm amidst the unrest.
In response to the protests, the district administration has announced a series of measures aimed at addressing worker grievances. Factories have been instructed to ensure that all workers receive a weekly day off and to pay double for any overtime worked.
Moreover, workers can expect their annual bonuses to be disbursed before November 30, providing some financial relief as the protests continue. To further support the workforce, a 24×7 control room has been established for immediate assistance.
Additionally, the administration has mandated the formation of Internal Complaints Committees in all workplaces to prevent sexual harassment, showcasing a commitment to improving worker conditions.
As the situation develops, local officials are hopeful that these measures will help quell the unrest and restore a sense of normalcy in the community. Observers are closely monitoring the situation, and it remains to be seen how effective these interventions will be in addressing the workers’ concerns.
