Missing Link: Mumbai-Pune Expressway Project Inauguration
The inauguration of the Missing Link project on May 1, 2026, aims to transform travel along one of India’s busiest expressways—the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. Officials expect this new route to significantly reduce both travel time and distance.
The 13.3 km stretch will cut the distance between Mumbai and Pune by about 6 km. Currently, drivers face average delays of around 30 minutes on normal days, with congested weekends extending that wait to as much as two hours. The Borghat section has long been notorious for its sharp turns and steep gradients, contributing to traffic congestion.
With Maharashtra Day marking the project’s inauguration, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde emphasized its importance for local commuters. “This is a significant milestone for Maharashtra’s infrastructure,” he noted during the ceremony.
Key facts about the Missing Link project:
- The project will reduce travel time by approximately 20 to 30 minutes.
- In its initial phase, it will be open only to light vehicles; buses will follow in later phases.
- Heavy vehicles will continue using the existing routes.
- The project includes the world’s widest underground tunnel measuring 22.33 metres.
- Fuel wastage in the Borghat region amounts to ₹1 Crore daily due to traffic delays.
This development not only aims to enhance connectivity but also seeks to alleviate environmental concerns related to fuel wastage. The Guinness World Records has even recognized the tunnel’s unique dimensions, adding an element of pride for local communities.
As this ambitious plan unfolds, residents eagerly anticipate smoother journeys ahead. Sunetra Pawar, a local resident who commutes frequently between the two cities, expressed optimism: “This will change our daily lives significantly.” With these improvements on the horizon, many hope for a more efficient and enjoyable travel experience on this vital route.
