Iron beam: Israel Deploys Laser System to UAE
On May 1, 2026, Israel deployed a version of its Iron Beam laser-based air defense system to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) amid escalating tensions with Iran. This significant move highlights deepening military cooperation between Israel and the UAE, particularly in light of ongoing threats from Iran.
The Iron Beam system is designed to neutralize short-range rockets and drones by firing a concentrated laser beam. During the conflict, Iran launched over 500 ballistic missiles and approximately 2,000 drones targeting the UAE. In response, Israel also sent a surveillance platform known as Spectro, capable of detecting Iranian drones from 20 kilometers away.
This deployment isn’t an isolated event. The military cooperation between Israel and the UAE traces back to the 2020 Abraham Accords, which normalized relations between Israel and several Arab nations. Several dozen Israeli military personnel are stationed in the UAE to operate these systems. A source familiar with the matter noted, “It’s not a small number of boots on the ground.”
The Iron Beam system complements existing air defense systems like the Iron Dome. It is expected to significantly reduce costs associated with air defense compared to traditional missile interceptors. According to a regional official, this collaboration underscores “the value of being Israel’s friend.”
Officials have stated that for the Iron Beam to have a significant impact in combat, at least 14 batteries are necessary. The system was declared operational in September 2025 after more than a decade of development.
The recent developments indicate that Israel provided real-time intelligence on missile launches from Iran, further enhancing defensive capabilities in the region. As one expert put it, this technology represents “a game-changer in the battle against projectile attacks.” In previous engagements, such as in 2024, Iron Beam successfully shot down 40 Hezbollah drones.
The implications of this enhanced military cooperation will likely resonate throughout the region as both nations prepare for potential future conflicts. With tensions still high due to Iran’s aggressive posture, this partnership could redefine security dynamics in the Middle East.
