Mamata Banerjee constituency: A Historic Loss in Bhabanipur
Mamata Banerjee, after three terms as Chief Minister, faced a stunning defeat in her home constituency of Bhabanipur. She lost to BJP candidate Suvendu Adhikari by 15,105 votes, a shocking turn of events amid accusations of electoral manipulation.
Prior to this election, many expected Banerjee to secure a comfortable victory. Her popularity and political experience seemed to position her well in the West Bengal elections. However, the results revealed a different reality.
In Bhabanipur, Adhikari garnered 73,917 votes, while Banerjee received only 58,812 votes. The voter turnout was remarkable at 92.47 percent, the highest since Independence. This level of engagement indicates that voters were eager to make their voices heard.
The immediate aftermath has left the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) grappling with its implications. TMC won only 61 seats out of 293 assembly seats, while BJP secured a commanding lead with 177 seats. This shift marks a significant defeat for Banerjee and raises concerns about her party’s future.
Mamata Banerjee claimed that the election process was manipulated, stating, “I have been defeated by force, the election process manipulated and votes looted by Adhikari’s BJP.” This sentiment resonates with some TMC supporters who feel disillusioned by the outcome.
A TMC worker expressed their despair succinctly: “We have nothing to say.” The mood among party loyalists reflects uncertainty about what lies ahead for TMC in West Bengal.
Despite this setback, Banerjee remains optimistic about her party’s resilience. She stated confidently that “TMC would come back to office.” Yet, with such a significant loss in her own constituency, the path forward may not be straightforward.
The political landscape in West Bengal is shifting rapidly, and experts are closely watching how these developments will unfold. Bhowanipore has become a focal point in this ongoing political battle—one that will likely influence future elections.
The next ruling regarding any potential challenges or allegations surrounding this election is expected soon. Meanwhile, repolling took place in several booths across Magrahat Paschim and Diamond Harbour due to reported irregularities.
