Iran Attack Indian Ship: Tensions Rise in Strait of Hormuz
In a troubling escalation, two Indian-flagged ships came under gunfire from Iranian forces in the Strait of Hormuz, prompting India to summon the Iranian ambassador. This incident highlights ongoing tensions in a crucial maritime corridor.
Reports indicate that both vessels had to turn back after receiving warnings and experiencing direct fire. Meanwhile, the tenth Indian-flagged vessel successfully crossed the strait amid similar threats from Iranian gunboats.
One of these ships, Desh Garima, was en route to Mumbai carrying crude oil. As of now, there are 499 Indian seafarers aboard various Indian-flagged vessels in the Persian Gulf region. The situation is precarious—many have been left waiting to safely navigate this vital waterway.
Since Iran’s decision last month to intermittently block access through the Strait of Hormuz, maritime operations have faced significant disruptions. Vessels attempting to cross have been warned by Iran’s navy that they were not permitted passage.
In total, 2,487 seafarers have been evacuated by shipping companies due to escalating risks. Currently, 13 Indian vessels are positioned in the Persian Gulf west of Hormuz, while six remain in the Gulf of Oman to the east and one is located in the Gulf of Aden.
Despite these challenges, India has reiterated its commitment to ensuring safe maritime passage for its vessels. Yet, the uncertainty surrounding Iran’s military actions continues to loom large over shipping routes.
This latest incident follows a broader backdrop of tensions between Iran and Western nations—particularly since the onset of hostilities with the US and Israel on February 28. Iran has previously opened and then closed this strategic waterway, complicating international shipping further.
As more ships await clearance and seafarers remain anxious about their safety, observers are closely monitoring how this situation will evolve. Details remain unconfirmed regarding any further actions or statements from either side.
