Himanta biswa sarma: Assam’s Faces Controversy Over Allegations
The controversy surrounding Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam, has intensified with allegations surfacing about foreign assets and multiple passports linked to his family. This situation has emerged as a significant topic of discussion in the lead-up to the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) aims to secure at least 100 seats out of the 126 available.
At the center of the allegations is Pawan Khera, a spokesperson for the Congress party, who claimed during a recent press conference that Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, the Chief Minister’s wife, holds passports from three different countries: the UAE, Antigua and Barbuda, and Egypt. Khera asserted that these passports, along with luxury properties in Dubai and investments in the United States, raise serious questions about the Sarma family’s financial dealings.
Khera’s claims included specific details about the passports, stating that one is a ‘golden card’ issued in Abu Dhabi, valid until March 13, 2027, while the Antigua and Barbuda passport was issued on August 26, 2021, and is valid until August 25, 2031. The Egyptian passport, according to Khera, was issued on February 13, 2022, and is valid until February 12, 2029.
In response to these allegations, Himanta Biswa Sarma has vehemently denied the claims, describing them as “malicious, fabricated, and politically motivated lies aimed at misleading the people of Assam.” He emphasized that the Congress party’s accusations reflect their “deep frustration and panic” as the elections approach. Sarma has threatened to file both criminal and civil defamation cases against Khera, stating that he and his wife would take legal action within 48 hours.
Sarma’s strong reaction underscores the high stakes involved in the upcoming elections, where the BJP is striving to maintain its dominance in Assam’s political landscape. The Chief Minister suggested that the allegations indicate attempts to undermine his credibility, implying that they are a desperate move by the opposition as they face the prospect of losing power.
The wider picture
As the political climate heats up in Assam, observers note that the controversy surrounding Sarma and his family could have significant implications for the BJP’s campaign. With 126 Assembly seats at stake, the party is keen to project a united front and counter any narratives that could sway public opinion against them.
While the allegations remain unverified, the political ramifications are already being felt. Sarma’s commitment to legal action suggests he is prepared to fight back vigorously against what he perceives as an attack on his integrity. As the election date approaches, the unfolding drama is likely to keep both supporters and critics engaged in the political discourse surrounding Assam’s future.
As the situation develops, many in the community are watching closely, hoping for clarity and truth in the midst of political turmoil. The outcome of this controversy could shape not only the future of Sarma and his family but also the political landscape of Assam for years to come.
