“TMC’s Israfil Chowkidar has threatened us that if these people win, they will burn our houses and carry out bloodshed,” said a local woman, capturing the tension in Falta, West Bengal. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has responded to these fears by announcing a repoll for the Falta Assembly seat on May 21, 2026, across all 285 polling stations.

The repoll comes after severe allegations of electoral misconduct arose during the initial polling on April 29, 2026. Reports indicated that at least 77 complaints were filed concerning EVM tampering, prompting widespread protests from residents who demanded accountability.

The situation has escalated significantly since the elections began. During the second phase of voting on April 29, many locals alleged intimidation from members of the Trinamool Congress (TMC). One woman expressed her concerns further, stating, “We want him to be arrested. We need safety for women.” These sentiments reflect a community deeply unsettled by the events surrounding the election.

The ECI’s decision to conduct a fresh poll aims to restore faith in the democratic process following these troubling incidents. According to an official statement, “On consideration of severe electoral offences and subversion of the democratic process during the polling in a large number of polling stations on April 29, 2026, in 144-Falta Assembly Constituency, West Bengal, the ECI directs that a fresh poll shall be conducted in all the 285 polling stations, including auxiliary polling stations.” The repoll is scheduled for May 21, from 7 am to 6 pm, with votes counted on May 24.

This repoll represents not just an administrative action but also a critical moment for residents who have voiced their concerns about safety and integrity in the electoral process. As they prepare for this new opportunity to vote, many hope it will lead to a more peaceful and fair outcome.
