Atlanta: England prepare for World Cup semi-final against Argentina, pressure on reigning champions
England defender Marc Guehi has stated that the pressure rests on Argentina as the Three Lions get ready to face the reigning champions in the World Cup semi-finals. The match, scheduled for Wednesday in Atlanta, marks England’s second semi-final appearance in three World Cups. However, the team has not reached the final since their victory in 1966.
To advance to the final this year, England must overcome Argentina. This encounter will be the sixth time the two nations have met at a World Cup, adding another chapter to their significant international football rivalry. Historically, matches between England and Argentina have been marked by dramatic moments, such as Diego Maradona’s ‘Hand of God’ goal in 1986 and David Beckham’s red card 12 years later.
Guehi, a 26-year-old Manchester City centre-back, emphasized the significance of the upcoming match, calling it “the game of your life.” He added that players must do everything they can for their country. England’s path to the semi-final included a 2-1 extra-time victory over Norway.
Tuchel addresses team dynamics and rivalry
England manager Thomas Tuchel addressed comments made by Jude Bellingham following criticism of the team’s performance against Norway. Tuchel had described England as “lucky” in the quarter-final and noted they “made life very, very difficult for ourselves.” Bellingham, who scored twice in that match, responded with “Yeah well, whatever” when asked about his manager’s remarks.
Tuchel downplayed any suggestions of tension within the squad, stating, “I’m a football coach and I try to demand the very best and not settle for lower standards.” He explained that his post-match comments were part of his duty to push the team. Tuchel also clarified that the interviewer did not convey his praise for Bellingham as a “world-class player” during the post-match interaction.
The manager confirmed that Declan Rice is prepared to start against Argentina. The Arsenal midfielder was substituted at half-time against Norway due to illness but participated fully in training on Tuesday. This means that Jordan Henderson and Jarell Quansah are expected to be the only England players unavailable for the semi-final.
When asked if the historical rivalry would provide extra motivation, Tuchel stated, “We don’t use it as fuel. We know why we’re here – we know what we want.” He acknowledged the rivalry as a significant aspect of the match but reiterated the team’s focus on their objectives.
Political tensions, particularly concerning the Falklands War in the 1980s, have historically influenced the relationship between the two nations. After Argentina’s 3-2 victory over Egypt in the last 16, their players were filmed chanting a reference to the islands. However, Tuchel emphasized focusing on the football aspect, stating, “We respect our opponent, but we don’t dip into historic events. We don’t make it bigger than it is.”
The challenge of Lionel Messi
The semi-final will mark the first time England faces Lionel Messi on the international stage. Tuchel praised the Argentina captain, describing how he carries his team as “absolutely incredible.” He noted Messi’s role as a leader and key player, highlighting his technical delivery and ability to create movement when he has the ball.
Tuchel acknowledged the difficulty of containing Messi, stating, “A lot of coaches have tried [to stop Messi]. He seems to always have another gear and another solution. He’s unique.” He recognized the magnitude of the challenge, adding, “We know how big the obstacle is. We know how big the ask is.”
Messi’s career includes numerous encounters with Premier League clubs, providing some context for England’s approach. Since the 2009 Champions League final, Messi has played 26 games against English clubs, securing 17 wins, suffering four losses, and scoring 27 goals. His performances against English club teams include notable displays at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium and Tottenham’s Wembley.

Messi has played two games against Premier League teams since a 4-0 result at Anfield, winning one and losing one. His five losses against English club teams have occurred against opponents known for high tempo and physical pressure, particularly the Chelsea teams under José Mourinho and his successors. This suggests that England might learn from how Cape Verde pressed higher up the pitch against Argentina to disrupt Messi’s supply.
Tuchel also shared a personal method for unwinding during the long summer camp, mentioning that he sometimes enjoys a bike ride and an ice cream for 15 minutes, which makes him feel like he is 15 years old.
