Manchester United sign Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa on five-year deal
Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa on a five-year contract. The midfielder’s transfer involved a release clause of approximately £35m. Tielemans expressed his pride in joining the club, stating that signing for such a special club feels incredible and represents the culmination of years of dedication.
Tielemans, who recently helped Belgium reach the World Cup quarter-finals, has spent the last three seasons with Villa. His initial move to the Premier League was in 2019 when he joined Leicester City. He will wear the number 18 shirt at United, previously worn by Casemiro.
Tielemans’ career and impact
Tielemans is noted for scoring Leicester’s winning goal against Chelsea in the 2021 FA Cup final. He also scored for Aston Villa in their Europa League final victory over Freiburg in May. His senior debut was for Anderlecht at a young age, and he later moved to Monaco in 2017.
Jason Wilcox, United’s director of football, praised Tielemans, highlighting his consistent performance as one of the most outstanding midfielders in the Premier League over the past seven years. Wilcox noted Tielemans’ technical qualities, ambition, and mentality, stating he will add composure, creativity, and leadership to the squad.
Last season, Tielemans faced calf and ankle issues, which limited him to 35 appearances for Villa across all competitions. This was his lowest appearance count during his time in England. He scored an 89th-minute equaliser for Belgium against Senegal at the World Cup and then converted an extra-time penalty for a winner, marking his 15th goal from 90 caps.

However, his World Cup campaign ended prematurely due to an injury sustained in the warm-up before Belgium’s 2-1 quarter-final defeat by Spain. Tielemans has accumulated 90 caps for Belgium and led his nation at the World Cup.
Transfer strategy and future additions
Tielemans’ signing follows the recruitment of fellow midfielder Andrey Santos from Chelsea for £48m, with a potential £2m in add-ons, and goalkeeper Karl Darlow, who joined as a free agent after leaving Leeds in June. Darlow is expected to provide competition for Senne Lammens, the current number one goalkeeper.
Reports indicate that a move for Atalanta midfielder Ederson has been put on hold. United’s approach to transfers this summer has been described as disciplined, with an increased focus on data. The club had previously considered Tielemans when he left Monaco in 2019 and again when his contract with Leicester expired in 2023, but opted against a move on both occasions.

United prioritised strengthening their midfield areas this summer and identified multiple targets. When Mateus Fernandes’ planned move fell through, the club remained calm, confident in their identified alternatives. Tielemans is seen as more of a number eight, offering competition to Kobbie Mainoo, while Santos is considered a number six.
The club is reportedly expecting to bring in at least one more midfielder, preferably an experienced player capable of making an impact in the Champions League and occupying a deeper role. Tielemans’ experience in the Premier League and his expressed desire to play for Manchester United were considered key factors in his signing.
Tielemans’ arrival is viewed as a significant loss for Aston Villa, especially following the ruptured anterior cruciate ligament injury sustained by his compatriot Amadou Onana at the World Cup. Aston Villa has also announced a new front-of-shirt sponsor, Visit Rwanda.
The signing of Tielemans and other recent transfers mark a busy period for Manchester United in terms of announcements at Old Trafford.
