France and Spain Set for World Cup Semi-Final Showdown
France and Spain are set to clash in a highly anticipated World Cup semi-final in Dallas on Tuesday. Didier Deschamps, the coach for France, has predicted a “spectacular” encounter between the two European football powerhouses. This match will determine which team advances to Sunday’s final.
Spain previously defeated France in Euro 2024, where they were crowned European champions, and also overcame them in a high-scoring Nations League match last year. Despite these past results, Deschamps, who is concluding his 14-year tenure with France after this tournament, stated that “the past is in the past.” He expressed confidence in his team’s current form, noting, “We are now at another level. We want to be in the final.”
Key Players and Team Dynamics
France, two-time world champions, are aiming to become only the third nation to reach three consecutive World Cup finals, a feat previously achieved by West Germany between 1982 and 1990, and Brazil from 1994 to 2002. Deschamps, who captained France to victory in 1998 and managed them to the 2018 World Cup title before their penalty shootout loss in the 2022 final, suggested that Spain might be considered favourites for this semi-final.
Deschamps highlighted Spain’s defensive strength, noting they have conceded only one goal in six games during the tournament. He anticipates a thrilling match, acknowledging the offensive quality of both squads. Luis de la Fuente, Spain’s coach, downplayed the favourite tag, stating, “It doesn’t mean anything. We are two great national teams facing one another.” He emphasised the inherent pressure to perform well for their country.
Captain Kylian Mbappe has been a central figure, contributing eight goals and three assists. His performance places him in contention for the Golden Boot, potentially surpassing Lionel Messi’s eight goals if he scores against Spain.
Mbappe has been in exceptional form, scoring in every knockout round after bagging four goals in the group stages. The Real Madrid forward is considered a significant threat to Spain’s defence. Having scored a hat-trick in the 2022 World Cup final loss, he is reportedly determined to achieve victory this year.

Another key player for France is Michael Olise, who, despite not scoring, leads the tournament with five assists. His partnership with Mbappe has been a highlight, and the Bayern Munich midfielder’s technical ability is expected to be crucial in breaking down Spain’s defence. Ousmane Dembele, the Paris-Saint Germain forward, has also been prolific, scoring five goals in the tournament, including a hat-trick against Norway and a goal in France’s 2-0 quarter-final win over Morocco. Mbappe and Dembele have collectively scored 13 goals, a scoring partnership not seen from two players from the same country since Brazil’s Ronaldo and Rivaldo in 2002.

For Spain, Lamine Yamal, an 18-year-old Barcelona player, is a key attacking force. He has scored one goal in the tournament, during a 4-0 group stage victory against Saudi Arabia, and also scored against France in the Euro 2024 semi-finals. Yamal was named player of the match in Spain’s quarter-final win over Belgium and has recorded the most successful dribbles in the tournament. He commented on his role, stating, “I know I can contribute even if I don’t score. I know my movements draw in many opponents, so I do everything I can to help the team.”
Mikel Oyarzabal, the Real Sociedad forward, is Spain’s top scorer in this World Cup with four goals, following six goals in six qualification games. He has a history of scoring crucial goals, including one against England in the Euro 2024 final, demonstrating his ability to perform under pressure. Mikel Merino, an Arsenal midfielder, is also a significant asset for Spain, having scored late winners as a substitute against Portugal and Belgium. While unlikely to start, he is expected to be a key option from the bench against tired defences.
Coaches’ Perspectives and Expectations
De la Fuente emphasised the demanding nature of the upcoming match, stating, “Tomorrow will be an extremely demanding match.” He also referenced Roman general Julius Caesar, saying, “Julius Caesar always said that you can’t win without suffering. I agree with that.” The Spain coach expressed his passion for his role and encouraged his players to enjoy the privilege of competing at this level. He concluded, “Let’s play football. You have huge potential. Let’s do what we do best.”
The semi-final is scheduled to kick off at 20:00 BST on Tuesday.
