Coimbatore Faces Heavy Rain This Summer
Coimbatore is bracing for heavy rain this week, with forecasts indicating a significant shift in the usual summer weather patterns. The Chennai Meteorological Centre has warned of thunderstorms and strong winds across several districts, including Madurai and Erode.
Rainfall is expected to begin on May 2, 2026, with light to moderate showers anticipated across Tamil Nadu. The forecast predicts that by May 3, heavy rain will hit the hill areas of Coimbatore and Tiruppur districts.
Key weather predictions:
- May 2: Light to moderate rain across various areas.
- May 3: Heavy rain expected in hill areas of Coimbatore and Tiruppur.
- May 4: Light to moderate rain in Coimbatore and Theni.
- May 5: Heavy rain forecasted in Coimbatore and surrounding districts.
- May 6: Continued heavy rain in hill areas of Coimbatore.
- May 7: Light to moderate rain expected again.
- May 8: Heavy rainfall anticipated in multiple districts including Coimbatore.
The maximum temperatures during this period are projected to hover around 39-40°C, making the expected rainfall a welcome relief for residents. Local farmer Ravi Kumar from Theni expressed his hope, saying, “This rain could save our crops from the scorching heat we’ve been facing.”
The unusual summer rainfall is attributed to a trough extending from western Rajasthan to the Kumari Sea. With wind speeds reaching up to 30-40 km/h, residents should prepare for sudden changes in weather.
This unexpected shift not only brings relief but also raises questions about the changing climate patterns affecting Tamil Nadu. As the weather evolves, many will be watching closely how these rains impact local agriculture and daily life in Coimbatore.
