Reserve Bank of India Launches CBDC-Based Digital Food Coupon Pilot in Gujarat
The Reserve Bank of India has launched a pilot program for a CBDC-based digital food coupon in Gujarat, starting on May 1, 2026. This initiative aims to enhance financial accessibility for local residents.
The digital food coupon will likely provide support to low-income families, allowing them to purchase essential groceries. Observers note that this program could significantly change how residents manage their food expenses.
According to financial analysts, the implementation of this digital system may also exert pressure on banks’ CET-1 ratios. Specifically, the new expected credit loss (ECL) regulations could push CET-1 ratios down by as much as 120 basis points.
Despite these challenges, banks are projected to withstand this impact over four financial years. Additionally, they can mitigate some effects through increased loan provisions.
Local stakeholders have expressed optimism about the pilot. They believe it could streamline access to food resources while supporting local economies.
As this initiative unfolds, many are eager to see how it will influence both consumer behavior and banking practices in the region. The next steps will involve assessing user feedback and adapting the program based on its initial success.
