Vijaypat Singhania, the esteemed former chairman of the Raymond Group, has died in Mumbai at the age of 87. His remarkable journey in business and aviation has left an indelible mark on multiple industries.

Singhania, who led the Raymond Group for two decades until 2000, transformed the company into a global fashion powerhouse. Under his leadership, Raymond expanded into synthetic fabrics, denim, steel, industrial files, and cement, showcasing his visionary approach to business.

In addition to his corporate achievements, Singhania was a celebrated adventurer. He held a world record for the highest altitude achieved in a hot air balloon, soaring to 69,000 feet, and set a speed-over-time endurance record for microlight aircraft in 1988. His adventurous spirit earned him the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award.

Singhania was not only a business leader but also a prominent figure in education and public service. He served as the chairman of the governing council of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, from 2007 to 2012, contributing significantly to the field of management education.

His contributions to society were recognized when he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, one of India’s highest civilian honors. In 1994, he was made an honorary air commodore by the Indian Air Force, reflecting his dedication to aviation.

In 2006, Singhania was appointed sheriff of Mumbai, a role that highlighted his commitment to the community. His legacy is further carried on by his son, Gautam Singhania, to whom he transferred his entire 37 percent stake in the Raymond Group.
