Fire Breaks Out in Uttam Nagar
A major fire broke out in a cluster of jhuggis at Mansa Ram Park near the fish market in Uttam Nagar, Delhi, gutting around 80 shanties. The incident occurred at around 11.57 pm on Wednesday, with fire services receiving information about the blaze shortly before at 11.50 pm.
Prior to this incident, the locality had recently witnessed tension following a violent incident during Holi celebrations, which had left many residents on edge. However, the swift response from emergency services transformed the situation dramatically.
More than 20 fire tenders were initially deployed to contain the blaze, which later increased to around 28. Firefighters battled the flames for several hours before bringing the situation under control at around 3 am on Thursday. Cooling operations continued for several hours afterward to prevent any fresh flare-ups.
Fortunately, no casualties were reported in the incident, as hundreds of residents managed to escape in time due to the swift evacuation carried out by police and firefighters. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) Kushal Pal Singh confirmed, “All inhabitants of the shanties were safely evacuated, and the fire brigade was called to the spot.”
Additionally, a police officer played a crucial role in preventing a potential explosion by moving a locked car fitted with a CNG kit away from the fire. This decisive action likely averted a more catastrophic outcome.
Authorities confirmed that around 80 shanties were completely destroyed in the blaze, leaving many residents displaced. The exact cause of the fire is still unclear, and details remain unconfirmed.
In the wake of the fire, the locality’s recent history of violence has raised concerns among residents. Just days prior, 16 people had been apprehended in connection with a violent incident in Uttam Nagar, further complicating the community’s recovery from this latest disaster.
As the investigation into the fire continues, officials are urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. Deputy Commissioner Singh also emphasized the importance of accurate information, stating, “Spreading false rumours is a criminal act and renders one liable to be prosecuted.”
The community now faces the challenge of rebuilding after this devastating event, with many residents left without shelter. Local authorities are expected to provide assistance to those affected as they navigate this difficult situation.
