“The IAF acknowledges the loss of Sqn Ldr Anuj and Flt Lt Purvesh Duragkar, who sustained fatal injuries in the Su-30 crash,” stated a representative from the Indian Air Force.
The crash occurred on March 6, 2026, in the Karbi Anglong district of Assam, approximately 60 kilometers from Jorhat airbase, where the aircraft had taken off. Communication with the aircraft was lost at around 7:42 PM, shortly before the incident.

The Sukhoi Su-30MKI, developed by Russian manufacturer Sukhoi and built under license by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), has been a crucial part of the Indian Air Force’s fleet since its induction in 1997. The IAF currently operates more than 260 of these advanced fighter jets.
Following the incident, the Indian Air Force expressed its condolences, stating, “All personnel of the IAF express sincere condolences and stand firmly with the bereaved family in this time of grief.” This tragic event has cast a shadow over the IAF community, highlighting the risks associated with military training operations.
As investigations into the cause of the crash begin, the IAF is expected to provide further updates on the situation and any findings that emerge. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the specific circumstances that led to the loss of communication and the subsequent crash.
The loss of Sqn Ldr Anuj and Flt Lt Purvesh Duragkar marks a somber moment for the Indian Air Force, which continues to prioritize safety and operational readiness in its training missions.
