Matheesha pathirana: Kolkata Welcomes Amid Recovery from Injury
In a significant update for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) fans, Matheesha Pathirana is currently recovering from a calf injury sustained during the 2026 T20 World Cup. His absence from the squad has raised concerns about KKR’s bowling options as they prepare for the early matches of the IPL 2026 season.
Pathirana, who was signed by KKR for a hefty ₹18 crore during the IPL auction, is expected to join the team by April 6, 2026. However, KKR’s head coach Abhishek Nayar has indicated that while Pathirana is making progress, he might not be match-fit until mid-April.
“The latest update is that he is with the Sri Lankan cricket board for his rehab. Somewhere mid-April is when they feel he’ll be match fit,” Nayar stated, providing a glimmer of hope for fans eager to see the young talent in action.
Currently, Pathirana has not yet joined the KKR camp, and his absence could have a notable impact on the team’s performance, especially considering that KKR has already lost key players Harshit Rana and Akash Deep to injuries.
In light of these challenges, KKR has taken proactive measures by signing Zimbabwe’s Blessing Muzarabani as a replacement for Mustafizur Rahman, who is also sidelined. This move highlights KKR’s commitment to maintaining a competitive edge despite the setbacks.
Shane Watson, a prominent figure in KKR’s coaching staff, acknowledged the situation, saying, “With Pathirana, obviously, it’s a waiting game at the moment.” He further emphasized the importance of not rushing Pathirana back into play, stating, “We certainly would never, ever push him any earlier than he needs to.”
As the IPL season approaches, the uncertainty surrounding Pathirana’s exact return date remains a concern for KKR. His recovery progress will ultimately dictate when he can rejoin the squad.
Details remain unconfirmed, but fans and teammates alike are hopeful for a swift recovery, as Pathirana’s talent could be pivotal for KKR’s campaign this season.
