Manchester United’s midfield transfer pursuit continues amid competition

Midfield Targets and Missed Opportunities

Manchester United are actively seeking to strengthen their midfield, with recent developments indicating a challenging transfer window. The club has reportedly missed out on two key midfield targets, Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes, who were both of interest to United.

On June 25, Manchester City reached a club-record agreement of £116m with Nottingham Forest for Anderson. Subsequently, Tottenham agreed to pay West Ham £85m for Fernandes. United’s interest in both players was clear, but the cost associated with bringing them to Old Trafford was a significant factor in not securing their signatures.

This situation echoes the summer of 2022 when United pursued Frenkie de Jong for an extended period. Despite agreeing to an initial deal of £63m with Barcelona, with an additional £8.5m in add-ons, the transfer did not materialise. The club spent months attempting to persuade De Jong to move to Old Trafford, only for him to remain at Nou Camp. This protracted pursuit led to a pivot in strategy, culminating in the signing of Casemiro from Real Madrid for up to £70m.

The departure of out-of-contract players such as Casemiro and Jadon Sancho has created vacancies within the squad. While Marcus Rashford and Andre Onana remain with the club, there have been no new arrivals so far this summer. Rasmus Hojlund’s £38m exit was confirmed in May following Napoli’s qualification for the upcoming Champions League season.

Current Transfer Activity and Potential Signings

United has agreed to a £35m deal with Serie A club Atalanta for Ederson. However, his medical examination is pending his participation with the Brazil squad in the World Cup. Brazil is scheduled to play Norway in the last 16 on July 5, meaning the medical will not occur until Brazil is out of the competition.

The club is looking to add at least one, and potentially two, more midfield options. Several names have been linked with a move to Old Trafford. Alex Scott of Bournemouth is one such player, though Arsenal has been informed that the 22-year-old is not for sale, and Bournemouth is keen to secure him on a long-term contract. Scott was a standout performer for Bournemouth during the 2025-26 campaign, making 39 appearances, scoring four goals, and providing one assist. His work rate and ability on the ball are seen as ideal for United, but a deal is considered far from straightforward.

Other midfielders mentioned include Tyler Adams, also from Bournemouth, and Carlos Baleba of Brighton. Another name being considered is Felix Nmecha, a former academy player at Manchester City. Nmecha is known to United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, who previously headed City’s academy. Nmecha, who stands at 6ft 3in, scored five goals and registered three assists in 42 appearances for Dortmund last term. He has a total of 13 goals and eight assists in 112 matches for the club.

The situation of Real Madrid’s France international Aurelien Tchouameni is also being monitored. Tchouameni is considered a ‘dream’ target for United, having been a vital player for Real Madrid since his arrival from Monaco in 2022. He is currently playing for France in the World Cup. Real Madrid is reportedly determined to retain the midfielder, who has a contract at the Bernabeu until the summer of 2028, though a departure has not been entirely ruled out at this stage.

Recruitment Strategy and Fan Expectations

United sources maintain that their recruitment strategy is sound, pointing to the relative success of the previous summer’s transfer activity as evidence. The club’s data-led recruitment approach means there is a comprehensive list of potential midfield options that could be suitable.

The decision to not match Tottenham’s bid for Fernandes was based on the substantial fee for a promising but still developing player. While missing out on top targets is not ideal, as seen with the De Jong situation in 2022, it does not necessarily indicate a disastrous transfer window. The club’s ability to adapt and secure alternative options, such as Casemiro in 2022, highlights the dynamic nature of the transfer market.

The club now faces the task of securing a midfielder who aligns with their desired profile and is available at an appropriate price. Until such a signing is confirmed, there may be some uncertainty among the fanbase. However, the transfer window is still ongoing, and further developments are anticipated as July progresses.

The speculation surrounding Nmecha’s future is expected to intensify following Germany’s exit from the 2026 World Cup to Paraguay, where he scored one goal and provided two assists in four appearances for his country.

United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, is well acquainted with Nmecha from his time as head of Manchester City’s academy.
