Atlanta: Harry Kane’s brace against DR Congo sets new World Cup records
England captain Harry Kane delivered a pivotal performance against DR Congo in the World Cup Round of 32, scoring two goals that not only secured a 2-1 victory for his team but also saw him surpass significant individual records. The match, held at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, saw England overcome an early deficit to advance to the Round of 16.
DR Congo initially took the lead in the seventh minute through Brian Cipenga, maintaining their advantage deep into the second half. Despite dominating possession, Thomas Tuchel‘s side struggled to convert their opportunities until Kane‘s intervention.
Kane’s record-breaking performance
Kane‘s first goal came in the 75th minute, following a cross from substitute Anthony Gordon. This goal marked his 12th World Cup goal, drawing him level with Pelé, who achieved his 12 goals across 16 World Cup appearances.
Just 11 minutes later, Kane scored his second goal, again assisted by Gordon, to complete England‘s comeback. This strike brought his total to 13 career World Cup goals, moving him past Pelé on the all-time scoring list for the tournament.
The brace also increased Kane‘s tally to five goals in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, placing him alongside Erling Haaland in the Golden Boot standings. Only Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé, both with six goals, are currently ahead in the race for the tournament’s leading scorer.
Beyond the overall World Cup scoring records, Kane‘s two goals also impacted England‘s national records. His goals in the knockout stage brought his total to five World Cup knockout goals, surpassing Sir Geoff Hurst‘s record of four knockout goals, a record that had stood since the 1966 World Cup.
Only Gary Lineker, with six World Cup knockout goals, now stands ahead of Kane in England‘s historical list. This places Kane just one goal away from matching another national record as England prepares for their next match.
Kane‘s international achievements continue to grow. He has now scored 20 goals in major international tournaments for England, comprising 13 goals at the FIFA World Cup and seven at the UEFA European Championship. He is also England‘s all-time leading men’s goalscorer with 84 goals in 117 international appearances and holds the record for the most goals scored by an England player at major tournaments.
The Bayern Munich striker previously won the Golden Boot at Russia 2018 with six goals. His current tally of five goals in the 2026 tournament places him one goal short of matching that personal best.
Teammate’s praise and transfer speculation
Anthony Gordon, who provided both assists for Kane‘s goals, praised his captain after the match. Gordon, who joined Barcelona this summer, compared Kane to Lionel Messi, highlighting Kane‘s elite level of play and consistent dedication in training and matches.
Gordon noted that Kane‘s current season has only been surpassed by Messi, emphasizing the striker’s consistent performance. He described Kane as an inspiration, observing his passion and seriousness in every drill and game.

There has been speculation regarding Kane‘s club future, with Barcelona reportedly inquiring about him during the World Cup. Kane‘s current contract is set to expire next year. However, reports suggest that Kane is expected to remain at Bayern and sign a new contract, with Barcelona reportedly focusing on Julian Alvarez instead.
Kane also made his 15th World Cup start against DR Congo, marking the most by any England men’s outfield player. His performance earned him the Superior Player of the Match award.
England‘s World Cup journey will continue with a Round of 16 match against co-hosts Mexico.
