Manchester United considers midfield options, including Camavinga and Berge

Manchester United is reportedly exploring new options for its midfield as part of a squad rebuild. The club has been tracking several players, including Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga and Fulham enforcer Sander Berge.
Reports indicate that United has been in contact with agents for both Camavinga and AS Roma midfielder Manu Koné to understand their situations. The club is seeking a third midfielder but is cautious about overspending.
Camavinga’s Stance and Mourinho’s Influence
Despite interest from Manchester United and other clubs, Eduardo Camavinga reportedly wishes to remain at Real Madrid. He aims to compete for his position and is confident in his ability to impress José Mourinho, who has returned to the Spanish capital. Camavinga has expressed a desire to work under Mourinho and revive his career at Real Madrid.
Journalist Fabrizio Romano stated that Camavinga wants to continue at Real Madrid and play for the club next season. However, it is not clear if Mourinho intends to keep the midfielder. If Real Madrid decides to offload Camavinga, the Premier League could become a potential destination, with United possibly emerging as a frontrunner.
Real Madrid is not expected to make a decision on Camavinga’s future until closer to the transfer deadline. Camavinga, who can also play as a left-back, was signed by Real Madrid as an 18-year-old in 2021. He won the Champions League in his debut season and again two years later.
Despite his talent, Camavinga experienced a downturn in form last year. During this period, caretakers Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa reportedly preferred other midfield options. Real Madrid is understood to be open to Camavinga’s departure to help fund pursuits of other targets, such as Manchester City‘s Rodri. While Real Madrid may be willing to consider offers for Camavinga, the player himself is believed to favour staying at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Other Midfield Targets
Sander Berge is another midfielder reportedly on Manchester United‘s radar. The Fulham player had a strong showing at the World Cup for Norway. Berge has experience in English football and is seen as a player who could anchor United’s midfield.
Berge was previously a target for United in 2024 before he moved to west London. Unlike Camavinga, Berge would reportedly be keen on a move to Old Trafford. Additionally, AFC Bournemouth‘s Alex Scott and Manu Koné of AS Roma are also on United’s list of potential targets.

United’s hierarchy may be hesitant to pursue a deal for Camavinga if the player’s interest in joining the club is not mutual. Berge, on the other hand, is considered a strong defensive option, though questions remain about his age and on-ball ability.
The club previously tried to sign Camavinga in 2021 and has also discussed Aurélien Tchouaméni with Real Madrid. United’s search for a defensive midfielder continues, with the club having held conversations with Camavinga’s agents.
