In recent weeks, the global fuel supply chain has faced significant disruptions, primarily due to ongoing conflicts in West Asia. These geopolitical tensions have prompted the government to issue orders for oil refineries to ramp up LPG production for domestic use, aiming to stabilize the supply for households across the country.
To further safeguard against potential shortages, the Ministry has implemented a 25-day inter-booking period for LPG refills. This measure is designed to prevent hoarding and black marketing, which have become more prevalent amid supply uncertainties. The government’s focus on ensuring that households receive their necessary fuel reflects a broader commitment to maintaining energy security during turbulent times.
However, the situation remains challenging. Reports indicate that LPG supply disruptions have led to refill delays of 2 to 8 days in major cities like Mumbai. The delays are causing significant inconvenience for residents who rely on LPG for cooking and other essential household activities.
Moreover, the supply of commercial LPG cylinders has been completely halted, severely impacting hotels and restaurants. In Bengaluru, for instance, only about 10% of hotels and restaurants received their LPG supply on a recent day, highlighting the strain on the commercial sector. P C Rao, a representative from the hospitality industry, expressed concern over the situation, stating that the lack of LPG is jeopardizing operations.
In response to the pressing needs of various sectors, the government has prioritized non-domestic supplies from imported LPG for essential services such as hospitals and educational institutions. A committee of three Executive Directors from Oil Marketing Companies has been established to review LPG supply requests from these non-domestic sectors, ensuring that critical services are not disrupted.
The ongoing geopolitical issues continue to impact the global fuel supply chain, leading to increased orders for LPG production. As the government navigates these complexities, the focus remains on securing a stable and sufficient supply of LPG for both domestic and essential commercial use.
