LPG Production and Supply Amidst Global Tensions
Government Initiatives to Boost LPG Production
The ministry has prioritised domestic LPG supply to households and introduced 25 day inter-booking period to avoid hoarding/black marketing. This statement from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring that households have access to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) amidst rising global tensions that have disrupted fuel supply chains.
In response to the ongoing conflict in West Asia, which has significantly impacted the global fuel supply chain, the government has ordered oil refineries to ramp up LPG production. This move aims to bolster domestic supply and mitigate the effects of international disruptions that have led to increased demand for LPG.
Challenges in LPG Supply
Despite these efforts, the supply of LPG has faced notable challenges. Reports indicate that refill delays in Mumbai range from 2 to 8 days, causing inconvenience for many households relying on this essential fuel. Additionally, the supply of commercial LPG cylinders has been completely halted, severely affecting hotels and restaurants that depend on this resource for their operations.
P C Rao, a representative from the hospitality sector, highlighted the severity of the situation, stating, “Only about 10% of hotels and restaurants in Bengaluru received their LPG supply today.” This stark reality illustrates the broader implications of the supply disruptions, as businesses struggle to maintain operations without adequate fuel supplies.
Regulatory Measures to Ensure Fair Distribution
To address the challenges posed by hoarding and black marketing, a 25-day inter-booking period has been introduced for LPG refills. This regulatory measure aims to create a more structured distribution system, ensuring that households receive their supplies in a timely manner while preventing stockpiling by individuals or businesses.
Furthermore, the Ministry has prioritized non-domestic supplies from imported LPG for essential sectors such as hospitals and educational institutions. This decision reflects the government’s recognition of the critical nature of these services, ensuring they are not adversely affected by the ongoing supply issues.
Oversight and Review Committees
To further streamline the LPG supply process, a committee of three Executive Directors from Oil Marketing Companies has been established. This committee is tasked with reviewing LPG supply requests from non-domestic sectors, aiming to facilitate a more efficient allocation of resources during this challenging period.
As the situation evolves, the government remains vigilant in monitoring the LPG supply chain, with ongoing assessments of production levels and distribution efficiency. The commitment to prioritizing domestic needs while managing external pressures will be crucial in navigating the complexities of the current fuel landscape.
