Kolkata prepares for World Cup final screenings as Mumbai turns homes into fan zones

As the World Cup final approaches, football enthusiasts across India are making preparations to watch the highly anticipated match between Spain and Argentina. In Mumbai, with the game kicking off close to midnight on Sunday, many residents are transforming their homes into dedicated fan zones, as pubs and restaurants are expected to close earlier.

The ritual for many Mumbaikars involves setting up a large screen and a loud television, gathering with friends and family to experience the match. Mithun Dasgupta, a finance professional from Vikhroli, shared that he recently acquired a new television specifically for the occasion, planning to watch the final with his son and friends. Similarly, Tanukripa Pal, an educator from Andheri (E), is hosting a house party where guests intend to wear their favourite team colours, aiming to replicate the vibrant atmosphere of a stadium within their living rooms.

Community Viewings and Office Fan Zones

While many are opting for home-based celebrations, others are finding alternative venues. For some professionals, the office has served as an impromptu fan zone throughout the knockout stages. Ashish Patil, a media professional based in Santacruz, noted that his workplace in South Mumbai has been hosting viewing parties for the tournament. Due to late work shifts, it is often impractical for him to return home in time for the matches. He confirmed that his office plans to screen the final as well, continuing a tradition that began with the quarter-finals and semi-finals.

Beyond Mumbai, the West Bengal government is also facilitating public viewings for the World Cup final. Plans are underway to organise a live screening on a giant screen at Nandan, a cultural complex in Kolkata. Similar arrangements are being made for live screenings on large screens in significant locations across various districts to cater to football fans throughout the state. The Youth Services and Sports Department is coordinating these efforts, consulting with other departments to ensure smooth execution.

Preparations and Anticipation

To enhance the festive atmosphere, the West Bengal government intends to decorate the Nandan venue with flags and other football-themed elements. There are also plans to invite former players and public figures to attend the screening, according to officials. Each district has been allocated Rs 1 lakh by the Youth Services and Sports department for setting up these screening facilities, as per a notification issued by Additional Chief Secretary Rajesh Pandey.

The final match is not just about the game itself; it will also feature a closing ceremony scheduled to begin 90 minutes before kickoff. This ceremony is expected to include appearances by various personalities such as Tom Cruise, Robbie Williams, Nicole Scherzinger, Jennifer Hudson, Laura Pausini, and Post Malone. Additionally, for the first time, the World Cup final will incorporate a Super Bowl-style halftime show. The lineup for this event includes artists like Madonna, Justin Bieber, Shakira, BTS, Burna Boy, and Gustavo Dudamel and the PS22 Chorus, with Coldplay‘s Chris Martin serving as the creative curator.

Divided Loyalties and Friendly Rivalries

In Mumbai, there is considerable support for both competing teams. Rohan Mehta, an entrepreneur hosting a watch party at his Bandra home, expressed his backing for Argentina, hoping to see Lionel Messi lift the trophy in what could be his final World Cup final. However, he noted that many of his friends are supporting Spain and Lamine Yamal, creating a friendly rivalry that he anticipates will continue with celebrations or teasing until sunrise. Suman Chakraborty, an art director, plans to watch the final at a friend’s place with fellow football fans, stating his support for Spain, particularly enjoying Marc Cucurella‘s performance throughout the tournament.
