In a significant development, doctors in Karnal have gone on strike due to an alleged assault on Dr. Prashant Chauhan by police personnel. The incident occurred on March 4, 2026, during a verbal spat over police deployment at the Gharaunda Community Health Centre (CHC).
Current Situation
The strike by doctors entered its third day on March 7, 2026. During this period, doctors have suspended outpatient department (OPD) services while resuming emergency services. The Haryana Civil Medical Services Association (HCMSA) has demanded the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against SHO Deepak Kumar and other police personnel involved in the assault.
Dr. Prashant Chauhan was allegedly assaulted while on duty, prompting strong reactions from the medical community. The Indian Medical Association, Haryana, expressed their concerns, stating, “It is disturbing when the force designed for protection of the law-abiding citizens becomes a source of intimidation and brutality, and that too of an on-duty government doctor.”
Reactions and Next Steps
Dr. Sanjay Verma, the district president of HCMSA Karnal, emphasized their demand, saying, “Our only request is to the district administration to register the FIR against the SHO and others.” Meanwhile, Dr. Poonam Chaudhary noted, “Doctors have started emergency services and I am hopeful they will resume other services soon.”
As the situation unfolds, the local community and officials are closely monitoring the developments, with hopes for a resolution that ensures the safety of healthcare professionals in Karnal.
