Hong kong football: Kochi Hosts Match Amid Controversy
How it unfolded
As the Indian National Football Team prepared for their upcoming match against Hong Kong in Kochi, excitement was palpable among local fans. However, just days before the scheduled event on March 31, 2026, a series of unexpected developments cast a shadow over the preparations.
On March 29, Khalid Jamil, the head coach of the Indian National Football Team, along with his players, faced a significant setback when they were denied entry to the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi. This denial was attributed to unresolved financial issues between the Kerala Football Association (KFA) and the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA).
Reports indicated that the GCDA demanded a staggering Rs 3 lakh plus taxes as rent for the stadium, alongside a security deposit of Rs 25 lakh. This financial hurdle led to the cancellation of a planned press meet for the India vs Hong Kong match, further complicating the situation for the team and their supporters.
KFA President Navas Meeran addressed the issue, stating, “It was a technical issue, which will soon be sorted.” However, the delay in payment raised concerns among fans and officials alike, especially since it had been ten years since the Indian National Football Team last played in Kochi.
In the midst of this turmoil, the Indian squad continued their preparations. Notably, Nepal-born defender Abneet Bharti joined the team camp ahead of the AFC Asian Cup qualifier against Hong Kong, alongside Ryan Williams, who was also named in the squad. Despite these efforts, the context was grim, as India had already been eliminated from contention for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia.
The financial disputes between the KFA and GCDA highlight a troubling trend in the management of football in the region, with critics pointing out that the GCDA’s “money first, football second” policy has created significant obstacles for the Indian National Football Team to host international matches in Kochi.
As the situation develops, the local community remains hopeful that the issues will be resolved in time for the match, allowing fans to witness their national team in action once again. However, details remain unconfirmed, leaving many in suspense as the date approaches.
For the players and coaching staff, this sequence of events not only impacts their immediate preparations but also reflects broader challenges facing football in India. The hope is that with community support and swift action from the authorities, the spirit of the game can prevail in Kochi, bringing together fans and players alike in celebration of football.
