Commonwealth Games boxing: Jadumani Singh, Preeti Panwar advance to quarter-finals

Indian boxers have shown strong performances at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with Jadumani Singh Mandengbam securing a dominant victory and Preeti Panwar advancing to the quarter-finals. Their successes highlight India’s medal aspirations in the boxing events.

Jadumani Singh’s progression in men’s 55kg

Jadumani Singh Mandengbam delivered an assured performance in the men’s 55kg boxing category, defeating Sumama Rehman of Pakistan by a unanimous 5-0 decision. This victory in the Round of 16 secured his place in the quarter-finals. The bout took place on Sunday in Glasgow, where Jadumani maintained control throughout the contest.

The Manipur boxer’s win against Rehman followed an earlier convincing victory over Scotland‘s Aaron Cullen in the Round of 32, marking an impressive start to his campaign. Jadumani, who previously earned a silver medal in the 50kg division at last year’s World Boxing Cup Finals in Noida before moving up to the 55kg category, showcased his speed and composure in the ring. He was also the first member of India’s boxing contingent to compete at the Glasgow Games.

The opening round against Rehman was closely contested, with both boxers exchanging punches. Rehman utilized his height and reach advantage, while Jadumani countered with quick footwork, sharp movement, and fast combinations. The judges narrowly favored Jadumani after the first round. However, the intensity increased in the second round, where Jadumani established greater control and scored a knockdown on Rehman, shifting the momentum in his favor. He maintained this advantage to secure a unanimous verdict from all five judges after three rounds.

Jadumani is now set to face England‘s Ellis Trowbridge in the quarter-finals on Tuesday. A victory in this match would guarantee him a place in the medal rounds, as Commonwealth Games boxing rules award bronze medals to both losing semi-finalists.

Preeti Panwar’s quarter-final berth

In the women’s 54kg category, Preeti Panwar also advanced to the quarter-finals with a dominant win over Deborah Mtenje of Malawi. The 22-year-old boxer secured her victory via a Referee Stop Contest (RSC) decision in the second round of their Round of 16 bout on Sunday.

Preeti, an Asian Games bronze medallist and a gold medallist at the New Delhi World Cup last year, controlled the fight against her opponent. The Malawi boxer received two standing counts, one in each round, leading the referee to stop the bout with 47 seconds remaining in the second round. All five judges had unanimously favored Preeti in the first round.

This win places Preeti just one victory away from securing her first Commonwealth Games medal. She is scheduled to compete against Northern Ireland‘s Nicole Clyde in the quarter-finals on Tuesday. Clyde had previously defeated Ghana‘s Nancy Bamfo by unanimous decision in her pre-quarter-final match. The two boxers are familiar with each other, having trained together as sparring partners in Belfast before the Games.

Other Indian boxing performances

Beyond Jadumani and Preeti, India’s boxing contingent has seen other notable performances. Lovlina Borgohain, an Olympic medallist, has already secured India’s first confirmed boxing medal of the Games. Competing in the women’s 75kg division, Lovlina received a direct bye into the semi-finals, which automatically guarantees her at least a bronze medal under Commonwealth Games regulations. She is slated to face Tuvalu‘s Tarona Khanum Badi Pasoni Taafaki in the semi-finals on July 31, with a spot in the gold medal bout at stake.

Additionally, Sachin Siwach, a significant medal prospect in the men’s 60kg division, has also progressed. He advanced from the Round of 32 after a 4-1 split decision victory over Canada‘s Keoma Al-Ahmadieh in a closely contested bout. The 26-year-old from Bhiwani, Haryana, is set to compete against England‘s William Hewitt on Monday for a place in the quarter-finals. India’s boxing team for the Glasgow Games comprises 14 members, with an equal split of seven male and seven female boxers, indicating strong medal expectations.
