Malaysia to host 2026 Bahrain Grand Prix at Sepang International Circuit
The Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia will host the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix from October 2-4, 2026. This event is scheduled to take place between the Azerbaijan and Singapore Grands Prix, and will see Formula 1 return to a venue that first debuted on its calendar in 1999.
The decision to hold the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia comes after the original race in Bahrain was called off earlier in the season. This arrangement ensures that the 2026 Formula 1 season can maintain a schedule of 23 races, fulfilling contractual clauses related to broadcasting rights and sponsorship budgets for teams.
Agreement and Collaboration
The agreement for Malaysia to host the Bahrain Grand Prix was reached through collaboration between Formula 1, the FIA, the Government of Bahrain, and the Government of Malaysia. This partnership allows Formula 1 to preserve a Grand Prix that otherwise might not have occurred. The rest of the 2026 Formula 1 schedule is expected to remain unchanged.
Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1, expressed his satisfaction with the outcome, highlighting the sport’s ability to adapt and find solutions. He thanked His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain, His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, and His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim of Malaysia, along with their respective governments, for their vision and commitment in making this possible.
Mohammed Ben Sulayem, President of the FIA, also acknowledged the collaborative effort, noting the tireless work of the FIA, Formula One Management, and partners in Bahrain. He emphasised that the safety and wellbeing of teams, volunteers, officials, and fans remained a top priority throughout the process. Malaysia has a significant history in Formula 1, and its return to the calendar at Sepang is seen as a testament to strong relationships and international cooperation within the sport.
His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Bahrain, stated that the decision was made with the blessings of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Sultan Iskandar. He highlighted the close relations between the two countries and Bahrain’s commitment to the sport, ensuring a successful and memorable race.
Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim of Malaysia conveyed his appreciation to His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa and the Government of Bahrain for their trust. He noted that hosting the event reflects the enduring friendship and partnership between Malaysia and Bahrain, while also reaffirming Malaysia’s capability to host major international events.
The Sepang Circuit and Future Calendar Considerations
The Sepang International Circuit, which last hosted a Formula 1 race in 2017, is recognised for its challenging layout, passionate fans, and unpredictable weather conditions. It is a circuit that holds a special place in Formula 1 history and is expected to provide a spectacular setting for racing, offering an unforgettable experience for fans both at the circuit and watching globally.
The naming of the event as the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia is a result of Bahrain’s assistance in covering a significant portion of the costs associated with staging the race. Bahrain’s national airline, Gulf Air, will serve as the title sponsor for the event. The return of Malaysia to the calendar for this one-off race was heavily influenced by Bahrain’s Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, whose country’s sovereign investment fund also owns the McLaren F1 team.
While the Malaysia race is confirmed, uncertainty remains regarding the final two scheduled races of the season in Qatar and Abu Dhabi. Formula 1 is developing contingency plans should these events be unable to proceed. A decision on these races is anticipated by September, with alternatives such as Imola in Italy being considered as potential replacements for a standalone season finale. Portimao in Portugal and Istanbul Park in Turkey are also under consideration, though their likelihood is less due to necessary construction work.
