Spain midfielder Gavi has stated his belief that Argentina’s Leandro Paredes should not face suspension following a confrontation that occurred after the World Cup final. The incident took place as Spain celebrated their 1-0 victory over Argentina.

During the post-match events, Paredes, along with Nahuel Molina, Thiago Almada, and assistant coach Roberto Ayala, appeared to be involved in a fracas on the pitch. Paredes was observed pushing Spain’s Eric Garcia by the throat. Gavi, an unused substitute, attempted to intervene but was pushed to the ground by Almada. Paredes also pushed the Barcelona midfielder to the turf.

FIFA has initiated an investigation into the incidents, appointing a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to assess what transpired. This investigation could potentially lead to suspensions for any involved players or coaches, and the Argentine Football Association might also face a fine.

Gavi, however, expressed his view on the matter, stating, “I don’t think [Paredes] should be suspended.” He acknowledged that the situation might not present a positive image for children but suggested that a physical and aggressive side is also part of football. He added that the most logical action would have been to send Paredes off during the match itself.

Paredes’ silence and FIFA’s disciplinary action

Leandro Paredes has addressed the public following the chaotic scenes of the World Cup final but did not issue an apology for his role in the post-match confrontation. His statement, shared on Instagram, focused on thanking supporters and praising his teammates for their efforts during the tournament.

In his message, Paredes wrote, “Thank you, Argentina! I love you today and always. Today, I write with a heavy heart, having been unable to bring our country the joy it so richly deserves. But with a chest full of pride for having given everything we had and for flying our flag at the very top once again!” He also commended his teammates for their dedication to representing the jersey.

The post, however, notably omitted any reference or apology regarding the altercation that overshadowed Spain’s victory. This has led to increased scrutiny of the midfielder’s conduct as FIFA’s investigation proceeds.

FIFA confirmed on Monday that disciplinary proceedings have been opened. An official statement from FIFA indicated that a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor has been appointed to investigate potential breaches of the FIFA Disciplinary Code concerning the post-match incidents, following an assessment of relevant match reports.

Earlier reports had suggested that Paredes received a red card after the match, but this dismissal was later removed from the official record, meaning he did not face immediate punishment on the night. The investigation by FIFA does not have a specified timeline, nor does it identify individual players, but it does raise the possibility of retrospective sanctions if breaches of the code are established.

Television footage from the final captured several flashpoints. Beyond Paredes’ actions involving Eric Garcia and Gavi, Argentina defender Nahuel Molina was seen in an apparent confrontation with Spain captain Rodri. Veteran defender Nicolas Otamendi was also observed engaging Rodri in a heated verbal exchange. Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni and other players eventually intervened to restore order.

Further controversy arose when Argentina’s players reportedly turned their backs to their own supporters as Spain collected the World Cup trophy, an act many interpreted as disrespectful to the newly crowned champions. FIFA’s investigation into these incidents is ongoing.
