Gautam Singhania Mourns the Loss of His Father, Vijaypat Singhania, in Mumbai

Vijaypat Singhania, who died at the age of 87, was a towering figure in the Indian textile industry and served as the chairman of the Raymond Group for two decades until 2000. His leadership transformed Raymond into a leading brand, and he was also known for his adventurous spirit, holding a world record for the highest altitude achieved in a hot air balloon.
Born on October 4, 1938, in Kanpur, Vijaypat was not only a successful businessman but also a recipient of the prestigious Padma Bhushan award. His contributions to the textile industry and philanthropy were recognized by various leaders, including Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who attended his funeral.
Gautam Singhania, who inherited a 37 percent stake in the company from his father, has navigated a family-business succession crisis with Vijaypat in recent years. This complex relationship adds a poignant layer to the mourning of his father’s passing.
His last rites were performed on March 29, 2026, in Mumbai, where prominent figures from various sectors gathered to pay their respects. “Saddened by the passing of Dr. Vijaypat Singhania, former Chairman of the Raymond Group, former Sheriff of Mumbai, and a towering figure of Indian industry,” expressed Varsha Gaikwad.
Devendra Fadnavis remarked, “His contribution to the textile industry, his philanthropy and adventurous spirit will continue to inspire generations together.”
Nawaz Modi Singhania, who described Vijaypat as “father-like” and one of the greatest men she had the honor of knowing, echoed the sentiments of many who admired his legacy.
