Ecuador’s Complaint and Mexico’s Home Advantage
Ecuador’s Complaint and Mexico’s Home Advantage
Ecuador has lodged a complaint with World Cup organisers regarding noise disturbances outside their team hotel. Local media reports indicate that approximately 1,000 Mexico supporters gathered in Mexico City on Monday, staging a ‘serenade’ ahead of the last-32 match between the two nations. The supporters reportedly used noisemakers, pans, and buckets to perform the Mexican folk song “Cielito Lindo” before police intervened.
The Ecuadorian football federation released a statement asserting that such conduct deviates from the principles of fair play, equality, and unity that a World Cup should embody. The federation added that Ecuador would “always respond on the pitch” and expressed confidence that these actions would not “tarnish the football celebration that unites two brotherly countries.”
The upcoming match is scheduled for Wednesday at Mexico City Stadium. Mexico has a strong record at this venue, having won all three of their World Cup games there. Ecuador’s progression to the knockout stages followed a victory over Germany.
Altitude Factor in Mexico City
The altitude in Mexico City, where the Mexico City Stadium is located at roughly 7,300 feet (2,200 meters) elevation, is a significant factor. While altitude may have contributed to Mexico’s perfect group stage record, it is not expected to provide the same advantage against Ecuador in the Round of 32.
Ecuador, however, is accustomed to playing at high elevations. The South American nation frequently plays home matches at over 9,000 feet (2,743 meters) in Quito. They have historically leveraged their geography to their advantage, remaining unbeaten at home during qualifying and securing victories against teams like Uruguay, Chile, Peru, and Venezuela in Quito. Ecuador also joined Argentina as the only nations to win a qualifier in Bolivia, where matches are played at nearly 12,000 feet (3,657 meters) of elevation.
Mexico has an undefeated record at the Estadio Azteca in World Cup matches, having hosted the tournament in 1970 and 1986. Ecuador will aim to be the first team to defeat Mexico at this stadium in a World Cup game.

The Challenge of the Knockout Stage
For Mexico, the upcoming match represents a significant hurdle, often referred to as the “fourth game.” Since 1994, Mexico has consistently reached the knockout rounds but has been eliminated at the first stage, with the exception of Qatar where they did not advance from the group stage. The last time Mexico reached the “fifth game” was in their quarter-final appearance in 1986, which was also the last time the World Cup was held on home soil.
Despite Mexico’s impressive performance in the group stage, winning all three matches and not conceding a goal, a sense of anxiety surrounds the team’s ability to progress further. Ecuador, coming off a victory against Germany, is considered a formidable opponent with a strong squad. The match is anticipated to be one of the most evenly contested games in the last-32 stage.
If both England and Mexico win their respective last-32 games, England would face Mexico in Mexico City. England is scheduled to play DR Congo on Wednesday.
