Eci: Election Commission of India Publishes Supplementary Voter List in West Bengal
The Election Commission of India is set to publish a supplementary voter list today in West Bengal, aiming to address ongoing controversies regarding voter exclusions. This development comes as the state grapples with the fallout from previous electoral roll discrepancies.
Before this announcement, many residents were anxious about their voting eligibility. The state government had issued directives to district magistrates, emphasizing the need for crowd-control measures during the list’s release.
Now, with the publication of this supplementary list, 27 lakh pending voter records have been settled. This means that approximately 2 lakh names are being processed daily. Residents can check their names through the ECI Net app or at local district offices.
Key statistics:
- 27 lakh pending voter records settled
- 2 lakh names processed daily
- 19 appeal tribunals established across 23 districts
The establishment of 19 appeal tribunals follows directives from the Supreme Court, allowing voters to contest any discrepancies they might find in the new lists. Archana Patnaik noted, “Anyone can check their names on the website,” highlighting efforts to ensure transparency.
This push for inclusivity comes amid contrasting developments in Tamil Nadu, where the final electoral rolls show a significant drop in voter count—from 6.41 crore to 5.67 crore. Thiruvallur district tops with 31,57,413 electors, while Ariyalur has the fewest at 5,22,954.
As West Bengal prepares for its electoral future, stakeholders are closely monitoring how these changes impact local politics and community engagement. Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury expressed hope that this would help restore faith in the electoral process among voters.
