David Payne Joins Sunrisers Hyderabad in Bengaluru
In a significant development for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, David Payne has been signed by Sunrisers Hyderabad as a replacement for Jack Edwards. The announcement was made today, March 28, just as the tournament is set to kick off in Bengaluru.
Payne, a left-arm pacer and Gloucestershire’s highest white-ball wicket-taker with 323 wickets, joins SRH for a fee of Rs 1.5 crore. His addition comes after Edwards was ruled out due to injury, having initially been signed for Rs 3 crore.
With an impressive record of 304 T20 wickets in 233 matches at an average of 21.16, Payne is expected to bolster the SRH bowling lineup. He has also made a mark in global T20 leagues, including the ILT20 and BBL, where he recently took three wickets in the final and was named player of the match.
The IPL 2026 season runs from March 28 to May 31, and SRH will open the tournament against Royal Challengers Bangalore today. This match marks the 28th encounter between the two teams, adding to the excitement surrounding the season’s start.
Payne’s career includes one ODI appearance for England, where he took one wicket for 38 runs against the Netherlands in June 2022. His T20 performance features five four-wicket hauls and one five-for, showcasing his capability to change the course of a match.
Fans and analysts alike are eager to see how Payne will adapt to the pressures of the IPL stage, especially after his recent success in the Big Bash League. His economy rate in T20 cricket stands at 8.03, indicating his ability to contain runs while taking wickets.
As the cricket community rallies around the start of the IPL season, Payne’s signing is seen as a strategic move by SRH to enhance their chances in the tournament. The buzz around his performance will undoubtedly be a focal point for fans and commentators.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding any further changes to the SRH lineup, but the excitement for the opening match is palpable. With the stakes high, all eyes will be on Payne as he takes to the field for his new team.
