BSNL 5G Launches Nationwide in India
On March 6, 2023, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) officially launched its 5G services across India, marking a significant step in its efforts to compete with private telecom giants like Jio and Airtel. This rollout comes as part of BSNL’s broader revival strategy.
The new 5G SIM cards are designed to provide seamless upgrades for existing 4G users, with prices starting as low as ₹10 for basic activation. BSNL has made substantial preparations for this launch, with over 92,000 upgraded towers now 5G-ready nationwide.
Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia emphasized the importance of replacing older SIMs to ensure optimal performance with the new 5G network. He stated, “This development aligns with BSNL’s revival strategy,” highlighting the government’s support for the initiative.
Early adopters in major cities like Delhi and Mumbai have reported impressive download speeds exceeding 500 Mbps, showcasing the potential of BSNL’s new technology. Unlimited 5G data is available on select prepaid plans priced above ₹500, catering to a range of user needs.
The 5G SIMs are accessible at BSNL outlets and online portals, making it easier for customers to transition to the new network. This launch is not only a technological advancement but also a strategic move to regain market share in a highly competitive telecom landscape.
BSNL is leveraging homegrown technology from organizations like C-DOT and Tejas Networks, which underscores the importance of domestic innovation in the telecommunications sector.
Looking ahead, BSNL aims for full 5G coverage across India by mid-2026, a goal that reflects its commitment to enhancing connectivity and service quality for its users.
The launch of BSNL 5G is a pivotal moment for the company and the Indian telecom industry, as it seeks to establish itself as a formidable player in the market.
As the rollout progresses, the impact on users and the overall telecom landscape will be closely monitored. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the full extent of the service’s reach and performance in rural areas.
