Winter storm warning in Sierra Nevada
A rare May blizzard is threatening major highway closures and travel chaos in the Sierra Nevada. A winter storm warning has been issued due to a powerful late-season storm that could bring significant snowfall.
Forecasts predict snowfall totals of 1 to 2 feet at elevations above 6,000 feet, with the highest peaks possibly receiving up to 4 feet. Additionally, wind gusts are expected to reach between 50 to 70 mph, which could cause further complications on the roads.
Interstate 80 over Donner Pass is particularly vulnerable to closures, as officials warn travelers about hazardous conditions. The National Weather Service has advised postponing non-essential travel until at least Tuesday.
In Wyoming, a winter storm watch has also been issued for specific mountain regions, where heavy snow accumulation is expected. Areas above 9,000 feet may see up to 16 inches of snow, while lower elevations could receive between 4 to 10 inches.
The storm is anticipated to move eastward into Nevada, Colorado, and New Mexico after impacting California. Communities across these regions are preparing for challenging weather conditions.
Emergency preparations:
- Residents are advised to stock up on emergency supplies.
- Travelers should check road conditions before heading out.
- Local authorities recommend keeping an emergency kit in vehicles.
As communities brace for this unusual spring weather, experts remind everyone about the unpredictability of winter storms—even in May. A spokesperson noted, “If you absolutely must travel during a winter storm, check out this list of emergency items to keep in your car so you’re prepared ahead of time.”
