Uber Faces License Revocation in Maharashtra Amid Regulatory Violations
Regulatory Action Against Uber
“We directed them to submit necessary documents; however they did not submit any of them, prompting us to take a decision to revoke their temporary licenses across Maharashtra,” stated Pratap Sarnaik, a key official in the Maharashtra government. This statement marks a significant development in the ongoing regulatory scrutiny faced by Uber and other bike taxi services in the state.
On March 9, 2026, the Maharashtra government officially revoked the provisional bike taxi licenses for Uber, Ola, and Rapido. The decision was made following allegations of regulatory violations, including the failure to submit required documentation and complaints regarding the harassment of women riders. The licenses had been granted in September 2025 under the Maharashtra E-Bike Taxi Rules, 2024, which mandate that all operations must utilize 100% electric vehicles.
Background of the Regulations
The introduction of the E-Bike Taxi Rules was aimed at creating employment opportunities for local youth while ensuring safety and transparency in the burgeoning bike taxi sector. The provisional licenses allowed these platforms a 30-day window to secure final approval and comply with various regulatory conditions, including adherence to driver codes, vehicle requirements, and safety measures.
However, the Maharashtra government has faced mounting pressure regarding the operation of bike taxis, particularly in urban areas where traffic congestion is a growing concern. “The decision was taken in view of the growing number of autorickshaws and the pressure on urban traffic,” Sarnaik added, highlighting the broader context of transportation challenges in the state.
Previous Actions and Future Considerations
This revocation is not the first instance of regulatory action against bike taxi services in Maharashtra. The state had previously banned bike taxi operations in January 2023, reflecting ongoing concerns about compliance and safety. Since the introduction of the E-Bike Taxi Rules, the transport department has taken action against 130 bike taxis and collected fines exceeding Rs 33 lakh.
Despite the current suspension of licenses, Sarnaik indicated a potential path forward for Uber and its competitors, stating, “It is only temporary. If they follow our norms and the terms and conditions of the permits, we will give the permits again.” This suggests that the state may consider lifting the ban if the companies can demonstrate compliance with the necessary regulations.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the specific actions Uber plans to take in response to this revocation. The company, along with Ola and Rapido, will need to address the regulatory concerns raised by the Maharashtra government to resume operations. The state will evaluate any submissions of required documents and compliance assurances from these companies in the coming weeks.
