India school summer holidays 2026
Severe heatwave conditions have prompted an early announcement of summer vacations across multiple Indian states for 2026. In Delhi, schools will close from May 11 until June 30, giving students a full 50 days off.
This decision affects various regions, including:
- Uttar Pradesh: May 20 to June 15, totaling 40 days.
- Bihar: June 1 to June 20, providing a brief 20-day break.
- Rajasthan: May 17 to June 20, allowing for a 34-day vacation.
- Haryana: June 1 to June 30, with a full month off.
- Chhattisgarh: April 20 to June 15, offering an extended break of 56 days.
- Andhra Pradesh and Telangana: April 24 to June 11, giving students 48 days of holiday.
- Odisha: Holidays began on April 27, with dates yet to be finalized.
- West Bengal: Vacations are already ongoing; official end dates are forthcoming.
Parents are concerned about the impact of the heatwave. Renuka, a mother in Delhi, expressed her worries: “It has become difficult for parents to drop their children at Anganwadi schools and pick them up after half-day classes due to severe heatwaves.” This sentiment is echoed by Anganwadi teachers who say, “Fearing heatwaves which may cause fevers and sunstroke, parents are not willing to send their children to Anganwadi Schools.”
This year’s early summer vacation announcement reflects a growing trend as states adapt to increasingly severe weather conditions. Observers note that this could be a response not only to the current heat but also to climate patterns that have been shifting over the years. The upcoming election results may also influence educational policies moving forward.
