India considers integrating Vaibhav Sooryavanshi into T20 squad after Ireland losses
India faces T20 squad selection challenges
The Indian cricket team is currently facing a significant selection dilemma regarding the integration of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, a 15-year-old batting prodigy, into its T20 squad. This situation has become more pressing following recent unexpected losses to Ireland. The team management is tasked with balancing the inclusion of new talent with maintaining team stability and performance ahead of the upcoming series against England.
The question of how to fit Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s talent into an established side has been a topic of discussion. After the two losses to Ireland, the need to find a way to include him has become clearer. Public interest in seeing the young player in action has been notable, with spectators reportedly arriving early for international games in anticipation of his potential debut.
Initially, the 15-year-old prodigy was not included in the playing eleven, as the opening duo of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma had performed well in the T20 World Cup. However, the recent results have led to a review of the team’s selection process, intensifying the debate around Sooryavanshi’s inclusion.
Gavaskar advocates for prodigy’s inclusion
Legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has strongly advocated for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s inclusion, particularly for the first T20 match against England. He suggested that Sooryavanshi could have been selected for both games against Ireland, with Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson playing in one game each, providing a platform for the talented youth.
Gavaskar emphasized the importance of playing Sooryavanshi from the first game in England, which is scheduled to begin on July 1. He stated that the team management should consider dropping out-of-form batters to make space for the young player. He also suggested that if the team aims to surprise England in the initial match, Sooryavanshi’s presence is crucial.
The losses to Ireland have been described as a low point in Indian cricket history by Sunil Gavaskar. He attributed these losses to overconfidence and a casual approach from the Indian batters. He noted that the series presented an ideal opportunity to introduce the young player to international cricket, and hopes that no more time will be wasted before his inclusion.
Reshaping India’s batting line-up
Integrating Vaibhav Sooryavanshi could necessitate significant changes to India’s batting order. If the team management decides to retain the Samson-Abhishek opening combination, other batters, such as Ishan Kishan, might need to shift down a slot. A potential new order could see Sooryavanshi at number three, followed by Kishan at number four, Shreyas Iyer at number five, Tilak Varma at number six, Shivam Dube at number seven, and Axar Patel at number eight.
This proposed lineup assumes that Suryansh Shedge would be dropped from the first game against England. The positions from numbers five to eight could offer flexibility, allowing for adjustments based on match situations and the need for left-right batting combinations. If Shivam Dube plays at number seven, he would be expected to bowl four overs on most days, as Abhishek Sharma is the only other top-order player who bowls part-time left-arm spin.
The team management, led by coach Gautam Gambhir, faces tough decisions. One logical, though potentially unpopular, solution could be to drop Sanju Samson. Samson’s recent performances, including scores of 5 and a first-ball duck in two games against Ireland, suggest he struggled in bowler-friendly conditions. If Sooryavanshi is to be introduced without disrupting the bowling attack, discussions with Samson might be necessary.
The five-match T20 series in England is set to begin on July 1.
