Lord’s: England secures Women’s T20 World Cup semi-final spot with win over West Indies

England’s Dominant Performance

England has advanced to the semi-finals of the Women’s T20 World Cup after defeating the West Indies by 38 runs at Lord’s. This marks England’s fourth consecutive victory in the tournament, ending the West Indies’ unbeaten record. The match was played in sweltering conditions, with temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius at the start of the evening game, and an air temperature of 41 degrees Celsius.

Danni Wyatt-Hodge was a key player for England, scoring 65 runs off 42 balls. Her performance contributed significantly to England’s total of 186-7, which is the highest women’s T20 total recorded at Lord’s and the second highest overall for either men’s or women’s teams at the venue. Wyatt-Hodge is currently the tournament’s leading run-scorer with 193 runs, averaging 65.

Wyatt-Hodge reached her fifty off 32 balls. She had a close call on 58 runs when she should have been run out, and was later dropped on 59, before eventually being run out on 65 by her partner Heather Knight. She hit eight boundaries during her innings. Wyatt-Hodge expressed satisfaction with her performance, noting the challenging heat conditions.

Heather Knight, who was dropped on 14, added 43 runs from 26 balls before also being run out. The partnerships between Wyatt-Hodge and Alice Capsey (66 runs off 50 balls), and Wyatt-Hodge and Heather Knight (40 runs off 24 balls), were crucial in setting England’s strong total.

West Indies’ Chase and Controversies

The West Indies, playing their first game at Lord’s, were put in to bat after losing the toss. They were limited to 148-5 in response to England’s total. No team has successfully chased down 187 runs in a World Cup match. The required run rate for the West Indies quickly climbed to 10 after just two overs, and they were 69-4 after 10.1 overs.

West Indies captain Hayley Matthews was dismissed for 14 runs in the fourth over, a decision that caused controversy. She was given out caught behind, with UltraEdge showing a spike despite a visible gap between bat and ball. Matthews disputed the umpire’s decision but later stated her respect for it. Deandra Dottin was caught in the deep for 19, and Shemaine Campbelle was bowled for 20. Chinelle Henry contributed an unbeaten 51 off 30 balls late in the innings, but by then the outcome of the match was largely decided.

The West Indies‘ fielding performance was noted as an area for improvement, with several dropped catches. Chinelle Henry was dropped three times during her innings, on 10, 28, and 45. England also had a sloppy fielding effort, dropping six catches, their most in a T20 match in two years. Despite these fielding errors, England’s bowling attack, including Sophie Ecclestone (1-22) and Lauren Bell (1-20), managed to control the run rate.

Looking Ahead

England will play their final group game against New Zealand on Saturday at The Kia Oval. A win in this match would secure top spot in Group 2 for England, potentially allowing them to avoid six-time champions Australia in the semi-finals. The West Indies still have a chance to advance to the semi-finals if they defeat Ireland in their last group match on Saturday.

Nat Sciver-Brunt, England’s usual captain, is currently sidelined with a calf injury and will miss the upcoming match against New Zealand. Charlie Dean has captained England in Sciver-Brunt’s absence. Reports indicate that Sciver-Brunt is making good progress and is targeting a return for the semi-finals.
